80% of world’s pain killers consumed by US

(BBC)–Rich Elassar is a victim of the fastest growing drug addiction in the US. The 36-year-old from New Jersey began taking the painkiller Percocet to get high at weekends. Within months, his addiction spiralled out of control and he turned to crime to finance his habit. Mr Elassar served three years in jail robbing a bank and lost his business and his wife as a result. Outside of prison he has struggled to stay clean, relapsing four times. Now he is under the care of a physician and taking medication to curb his addiction. He has been clean for more than a year. Americans consume 80% of opiate painkillers produced in the world, according to congressional testimony by the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians. And addicts are not the only ones impacted by the crisis.

I can practically hear the other countries snickering and judging America’s addiction to pain killers.  Just pointing fingers and calling us junkies.  Well hey, did you ever think that maybe we were taking all of these pain-killers for a reason?  That maybe we are a little sore from carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders for the last 100 years.  Who else is going to do it?  You British?  You Chinese? We have a responsibility that you can’t possibly fathom.  You call on us to solve the world’s problems and then curse our pain killers.  You have that luxury.  You have the luxury of not knowing what we know…that our addiction to pain killers, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, probably saves lives.  You don’t want to admit the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about at parties you want America on pain killers.  You NEED America on pain killers.  SING IT LEE!!!
