Vindication Via The Bruins
That felt great. The Stanley Cup Finals has displayed to the greater hockey world what the Vancouver Canucks are all about. They love to chirp, they play dirty, the dive, they bite, and they throw gutless blind hits to the head. Finally, somebody besides the Chicago Blackhawks has the sand to stand up to the Canucks and punish them for disrespecting the game of hockey. Now the Bruins have discovered the final piece to the puzzle that will let them beat Vancouver. If you punish them physically, out work them, and frustrate them…the Canucks will lose their cool, take dumb penalties, and quit. Luongo looked completely rattled for the last 40 minutes.
Last night’s game was an absolute beat down. The Bruins physically and mentally dominated the Canucks from the second period on. I feel vindicated by this series and I am 100% on the Bruin bandwagon. The Bruins are the opposite of Vancouver in so many ways. They have tough guys who are confrontational, but they are more than willing to answer the bell when challenged. I love the way they play. Even Tim Thomas got into the hitting game last night when he checked one of the Sedin Sisters.
The Bruins most likely will not score in abundance like they did in game 3, but they need to duplicate the level of intensity they brought for the duration of the series. They are still trailing and they must continue to attack Vancouver across all 200 feet of the ice surface. I was completely wrong about Shawn Thornton. I wanted Seguin in the lineup and I undervalued what Thornton brings to his teammates with his toughness and energy. Thornton is just flat-out scary and the ref tossing him out of the game mid way through the 3rd period may have save somebody’s life.
I have one final thought on last night’s game. Game exemplified why I love hockey and the NHL more than any sport. The NHL has an element of frontier justice. Burrows was a punk(and a difference maker) so Shawn Thornton smashed him early in the game to set the tone. Burrows takes a swipe at Tim Thomas late, so Milan Lucic turns into hockey’s version of Wyatt Earp and doles out the punishment immediately behind the net. No other sport or league has this mentality of self policing and standing up for your teammates. I can’t wait for Game 4 as I am sure the hatred between the teams is about to boil over.
The Bruins told the Canucks they are coming…and Hell is coming with them!

Nice post- I was looking for a Chicago board b/c I figured that was the place to go to find some fans who hate the Canucks like I do right now. GRanted we don’t have 3 or 4 playoff series in recent years, like you all do. But the Canucks’ dirtiness only took 1 period to shine through w/ the Burrows’ biting incident.
I was rooting for the Hawks last year partly b/c you’re original 6 (other than Montreal!) and partly b/c you were prepared to take out the Canucks of the East – Philly. Although in fairness to Philly, they don’t take epic dives like the Canucks. So I guess it’s your turn to pull for an out of conference original 6 team playing against a hated rival. I hope we can come through.
The only payback for the Horton hit is winning this series. That hit was so so dirty. Rome moved laterally 5-7 feet to line Horton up and he didn’t move into the hit at all until Horton had passed the puck. Horton didn’t have his head down – he was looking left for a return pass. He has a right to look at the puck on a break w/o fearing a guy taking his head off from the other side. Those hits need to go … too many stars all around the league are being knocked into next year.

I love the feedback from Boston. So pumped Chicago and Boston have a mutual hatred for Vancouver. Burrows and Lapierre are definitely gutless french punks, but Bieksa is a awful human as well. Here’s hoping Luongo has lost his mind and the Bruins continue to stomp on the Canucks. U-S-A!!!

It is so refreshing to get an outside of Boston opinion that completely validates all of the B’s fans gripes from the drop of the puck in Game 1. I really hadn’t seen these guys all year. I heard they were the best in hockey and I was expecting a hard fought, but cleanly played series. They proved me wrong from the get go. I feel now more than ever that Boston HAS to win this series. Not just to end the drought, but it would just seem so wrong for Vancouver to win it now. I feel most in the Hockey world would agree.

It gives us hope knowing your boys have taken out these bunch of gutless punks posing as hockey players, this year notwithstanding (though you had the Canucks worried sick this year too as an 8 seed). I’ll post this link on some boston sites to bring some more Boston love your way.
If Hamhuis remains out and Rome out the series, the Bs have the edge in goal and on the back line now. We wish we could have Horton back in a heartbeat. But since that’s not happening, we need to keep wearing down their D-men and going right at Luongo.

As a Long time Bruins fans I must admit I have always liked the Hawks as well.
I was pumped watching the Blackhawks win it all last year. Seeing the fountains in red was cool.
I think I really started watching the Hawks back when you had a couple of our local boys Roenick and Amonte playing for you.
However the main reason that I like the Hawks is that our teams are both usually very much alike.
Both teams usually have their few ‘stars’ but then also have a bunch of lunch pail guys that just go and get the job done. Tough guys that will hit, fight and skate through a wall. Watching Duncan Keith lose all his chicklets last year and then come back and play was unreal. Love that guy. Let’s just hope that this year the B’s can finish what the Hawks almost accomplished earlier in the playoffs and finish off these dirty, diving, gutless Canucks! They don’t deserve sh*t!!

anyone who follows hockey knows the Bruins and Hawks are two original 6 who build teams where character and accountability still mean something; you’d never see flopping by either team as those types of players wouldnt be brought in to play in these cities. It’s pretty disgusting to watch VAN with my 6 year old son and constantly have to point out how NOT TO PLAY the sport. Much respect in Boston for Chi-town, good luck next year boys. Win it for Horty!

This year is a fluke. Blackhawks still own Vancouver. We just needed one more bounce or one more game of a healthy Dave Bolland to knock out Vancouver. Blackhawks are going to rebuild from within and will be in the finals next year against…Boston. Boston is only going to get better. Chiarelli is a cap master and the B’s will only get better as Seguin blossoms into a superstar. I really think the B’s are ahead of schedule. I am enjoying this mutual love and respect right now, because I think this will become an intense rivalry over the next decade as the two teams trade Stanley Cups.
No worries. We’ve been waiting a loooooooong time for a chance like this in Boston so Bs diehards are out in force. Forget the Sox, Pat and Cs, we need a Bruins Cup desperately. I know Hawks fans suffered their share of misery so it was nice to see your boys finally get it done last year. Now that we’re playing the Canucks in the Finals, we also share a common hatred.
I’ve given up on TSN and CBC. I’m all for Canadian teams doing well. I’m happy hockey is leaving Atlanta for Winnipeg, etc. But the people on those sites are off their rocker. Not only are they such Canuck (or Hab) homers, they don’t even seem to understand the game. I’m sick of explaining to those idiots how different the Chara on Pacioretty hit was from last night (and I’ll call out a Bruin on a dirty play, including Paille on a head shot on Sawada [Dallas] this year; but that hit Sawada was the puck carrier and it wasn’t late like Rome’s).
Ray Bourque was on the radio in Boston this morning saying in his era, players had respect when it came to head shots, blindside hits, etc. You can have great, hard hitting hockey without head shots. And teams will actually have star players playing and not in dark rooms nursing their brains.
Mayor- I sure as hell hope you are right! I’ll take 1 Cup for now and be immensely satisfied. But if we end up trading Cups down the line … so be it!
I agree the Bs should only get better (though I’ll feel better about that comment when I see Horton return to full health … fingers crossed there). We also have the #9 pick in this year’s draft courtesy of the Leafs. That Kessel trade keeps on giving. And the Hawks have a great young core for sure. Seemed like you lost just one too many role players in the offseason (most notably Byfuglien who is more than just a role player), but should be able to fill out the roster better next year.
Exactly. I really think the Bruins should take a run at either Shea Weber or Parise this off season. Ryder, Kaberle, Recchi, and maybe Savard(unfortunate) all coming off the books. They will have plenty of cash and the rest of their core guys are locked up. Thomas is old, but looks like he can play forever, and if he cant play much longer Rask is waiting in the wings.
Buff was always a big game player, but he drove us nuts for probably 75 games year because his effort was inconsistent. The Blackhawks need another #2 center and some extra grit. They really missed Burish, Fraser, and Eager this season. I wish I could fast forward to October. Remember the name Jeremy Morin. Then we are also excited for a full season of BC and Westminster(CT) product Ben Smith.
Good stuff, Mayor. You definitely know your stuff. I like the Weber or Parise idea and, it’s true, the Bs will have some pretty solid cap-room to work with. If we ever signed Weber, we’d have Chara, Seidenberg and Weber as our top 3 D-men. I don’t think many teams could put up any better in the shutdown D category.
You should keep getting exposure for your blog. It’s a better read than all of these knucklehead “experts” on the big-name sites.
I noticed you were relatively supportive of a trade to bring in Kessel. Be careful what you wish for with that guy. He was uncoachable in Boston and seems to have had some similar problems with Wilson in Toronto. I know there’s plenty of upside skill-wise. He just strikes me as a selfish guy that doesn’t get what it takes and might not ever.
I completely agree with your assessment of Kessel. He has been a selfish and at times lazy player. However, in terms of pure ability he may be top 5 in the league. So if you are shedding Brian Campbell’s cap hit of 7.14/year it might be worth the risk. I think the Blackhawks locker room is so strong with guys like Toews, Sharp, Seabrook, etc, that Kessel could really blossom. Kane has a bad wrap in some circles and makes some mistakes off the ice…but he plays the game the right way. I think a lot of that has to do with the leadership in the room. Toronto didn’t have that kind of leadership, and perhaps Boston didnt either at that time. I think thats when Bergeron was still concussed badly. Kessel is also much older than he was in Boston, so maybe a combination of leadership, less pressure/exposure, and a little maturity and he could really take off.
I think Weber likes being in Nashville and will probably stay now that they won a series, but yeah the Bruins should take a run at him and if they had Weber and Chara that would be scary for the other 29 teams. Parise is probably more feasible and would give the Bruins that elite scoring that they haven’t had since probably Cam Neely. Parise-Krejci-Horton would be a pretty dominant line.

I’m just floored at the crap coming out of their mouths – coach and all (meanwhile, Julien called out his own players for the finger antics last night. I’m fine w/ Julien calling them out, but just as fine w/ Recchi and Lucic doing what they did under the circumstances).

Ya Me – First off, you shouldn’t laugh at your own joke. It makes a funny joke … not so funny. When you crack a lame joke and still laugh, then I just feel bad for you. Something tells me you’re spending a lot more time behind a computer than me.
I’m guessing you are a Canadian and therefore a de facto hockey expert. There are some reasonable folk north of the border, but all this Canadian arrogance right now is fitting since it mirrors the Canucks’ antics this series (and as Hawks and other western conference teams will attest, the past several years). I’ll try to show you I’m not a hypocrite in a second, but to say I don’t know hockey is your Canadian hockey arrogance shining through (again, assuming you are Canadian).
I just watched the Ryder hit. I was at that game so didn’t have the benefit of replay. That is not a hit I like to see. It’s tough to say 100%, but it looks like Ryder disguised it to look like he was just turning up ice – but knew Jones was there. The biggest difference from the Horton hit was Jones saw Ryder just in time and avoided major head contact – he pulled up just enough to reduce the force. Anyway, that’s a hit that has to be out of the game. Again, Ryder disguised it enough to make it tough to say he intended to hit the guy – BUT I’m agreeing he probably did. There have been far too many hits this playoffs that went w/o a suspension when there should have been one. Downie, Torres, Mike Richards, Eager … and sure, perhaps Ryder, should have been sat.
This is about the game not the Bruins. The league and the players need to get this crap out of the game. Stars are dropping left and right. Back in the good ol’ days, there was plenty of blood and violence in hockey – but players didn’t try to take each other’s heads off at 25mph from the blindside. You can have hard hitting, physical hockey w/o dirty hits. One of the few players who has been extra vocal about these head shots is Ference. He called out Paille for a hit on Sawada (Dallas) earlier this year. And, guess what, Canadian knuckleheads like Don Cherry were all over Ference for “breaking the code” and saying his own teammates hit was one that shouldn’t happen. Well done, Cherry. What a dope.
The Bruins have suffered losses more than most teams to these head shots. Savard for basically his career; Bergeron who was near dead, missed a year and took another year to resemble the player he was (IMO – he never has gotten back to the offensive player he once was, as great as he is); Krejci (more moderate than the other 2); and now Horton. Crosby never made it back this year. It doesn’t matter what team, these hits are terrible for the game. If you’re a Canadian, you should really care before it takes even more of a toll on the game.
Ok, so now you are talking and not mouthing off. Regardless, the myopic views here a bit much. Being Canadian or American has nothing to do with it either – that’s just a polarizing distraction.
Yes, these hits are not acceptable – that said, Boston, Chicago, all teams are guilty of the same scenarios – and based on the punishments given in the very recent past, Rome shouldn’t get 4 games, he’s not a dirty player and made a bad choice – he is not a demon for Pete’s sake.
However, if you are going to demonize a player for a bad hit, Chara is the leading candidate for the top bad guy position

Where have I been mouthing off? Read everything I’ve written from the top down. I’ve been talking hockey the whole time. From what I’ve seen, the Canucks have been classless and gutless. Let’s see, we’ve got biting, headhunting, and diving all over the place. The Sedins have taken about 2 dives each per game – though they are far from the only ones. Thomas took a mini-dive in game 1, but otherwise you’d be hard pressed to point to instances of Boston diving. The Canucks dive so often, it just doesn’t pass the smell test to say otherwise. It’s pathetic.
Before the series started Ryan Whitney of the Oilers was on Boston radio saying 90% of the league is going for Boston b/c everyone hates the Canucks and how they play. I was shocked to hear a current player speak so candidly about another team like that. No Bruin would say about the Habs what Whitney said. Sure, a Bruin might say “it’s no secret we don’t like those guys.” But Whitney really laid it on thick. I was surprised … that is until I watched game 1. It’s really too bad the Canucks feel compelled to play the way they do. But there’s no denying it.
As for Chara, is this about Pacioretty? Please. I’m sick of explaining how different that hit was from any of the true dirty hits that happen way too often. Chara gets criticized in Boston all the time for not being physical enough (I disagree and know his value is his stickwork and positioning, which allow him to be the best shutdown D in the game). He has no history of headhunting (thank god, because he actually could probably kill someone). Anyway, of course, no team is free of dishing out dirty hits. It’s a league wide problem. But the Bruins don’t have a true goon. Raffi Torres is a lot closer to that. Marchand and Boychuk are the two Bs who walk a fine line at times, but they’ve never crossed it to the point of being truly and excessively dirty. If they do, I will be ashamed of such action.
Anyway, you lost all credibility saying “Chara is the leading candidate for the top bad guy position.” So laughable. And you said, I don’t know hockey (even though I’m the one “mouthing off”).
I’d add one more point regarding the Canucks and lack of class. Teams take after their coach. After Game 1, Julien and Bergeron discussed the biting – but in the end, they more or less said it is what it is; the league will do what it will do; we are focused on Game 2. After the no suspension, Julien said the same thing. No whining. No bitching. No compaining. We’d all like to see that out of him at times in Boston, but he sticks to the game plan and keeps his team focused on the game.
You’d think Vigneault wouldn’t have much to complain about after Burrows wasn’t suspended and after his team flopped all over the ice. You’d be wrong! He whined about Thomas’ style and challenged the league to tell him when his team can hit Thomas when he’s out cutting down angles. Wow. Just wow. He and Boucher are on the same page with their jedi mind tricks. Good stuff.
Julien and the rest of the Bruins would not be saying what the Canucks have said if a Bruin laid out a Canuck with the same hit. Julien would at most would say, “It’s the league’s decision; we have to live with it; do we think the suspension could’ve been shorter, perhaps.” I wouldn’t be surprised if he admitted it was a hit that the league is trying to take out of the game. Not Vigneault, he said it is NOT the type of hit the team wants out of the game.
So it starts with the coach, which is why the Sedins thought it was funny to introduce Burrows as the “vegetarian” on national tv here. That’s great. Commit suspendable offenses and then when the league let’s you off the hook, make a mockery of it. Ditto Lapierre to Bergeron in Game 2. When the Bs finally had enough of the targetting of Bergeron (um, can you say classy), they did their finger antics in Game 3. And, guess what, Julien had some stern words for Lucic and Recchi after the game.
If you can come up with some legitimate specifics of why the Bs are classless, let’s hear it. Otherwise, enough with the blanket statements you can’t back up.

The hit was late. Horton didnt have his head down, he was looking for a possible return pass and Rome blindsided him. Gutless hit. No two ways around it. I wish he only got two games so Thornton could kill him. No worries though, hockey players have long memories.

I really think Luongo is rattled. After a game like that it usually takes him a few games to settle back in. Its important for the B’s to jump on them early. Recchi and Thornton did an outstanding job of setting the tone in the last game. If they do that again we should see Luongo playing with two blockers and trampoline pads. Back to back blowouts are not out of the question. See Chicago games 4 and 5. Do it Bruins

Also, I was around in the 80’s, apparently you were not. The Bruins lost to Edmonton twice in the Stanley Cup Finals and we never ‘hated’ them. They had one of the best NHL teams of all time and knew it would be an uphill battle. We respected their talent. NOBODY on either of those Edmonton teams ever pulled the whining, cheap shots, diving or overall complaining that this Vancouver team does. How you can root for a team of pu**ies like that is beyond me and putting the Edmonton teams of the 80’s in the same category as them just demonstrates how little you actually know about hockey.
Of course you do understand that without your goaltender your “team” would be a bottom feeder.
… and oh the irony, your goaltender is the only reason you are in the playoffs and yet he’s lost all 3 close games to Luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu and he wasn’t a factor in the blowouts. In the big scheme of things thoses blowouts are irrelevant (didn’t you think it was a bit easy?).

If the Canucks don’t deserve to win, what did Claude Lemieux deserve? Even the beyond-criticism Detroit Red Wings haven’t always won with honour, especially when Vladimir Konstantinov was doing his Vlad the Impaler thing. Then, there were the Dallas Stars who relied on lots of dirty Derian Hatcher and Richard Matvichuk play to get through Colorado and win a Cup. Sorry, the Canucks don’t measure down to their evil-doing predecessors and it’s not even close.
There have been two transgressions in the Stanley Cup final worth discussing for more than five minutes. There was Aaron Rome’s late hit, which the NHL said would have been clean if landed a split second earlier. And there was the bite, which may have bruised a finger.
The rest is mostly torque to keep the Canucks-as-villain motor running. A lot seems to work as fuel, too. Even Luongo’s mundane comment about how he could have made the save on Game 5’s winning goal has had legs for two days. There wasn’t a scrum in the Boston locker-room Sunday in which a player wasn’t pressed for comment about Luongo’s supposed foul.
Gregory Campbell nailed it when he said Luongo never meant it the way it was presented. But who cares? There’s a narrative to keep alive.
It’s a disingenuous one, too, when you consider the Bruins have matched the Canucks taunt-for-taunt, and far outpaced them on the post-whistle, slash track. The Canucks definitely lead the series in embellishments, no question. But is diving worse than two-handed slashes? Depends who you ask.

I’m sorry, have they changed the rules of hockey? Are the Bruins violating the rules by having a goalie between the pipes?
I always thought that having a good goalie was usually a requirement for any team attempting to win the Stanley Cup. Mayor…correct me on that if i’m mistaken.
As for your continued denial over your Canucks?…it is entertaining. Your attempt to drag the Bruins down to the level of the Canucks is hysterical. The diving and embellishment that they do after every whistle is disgusting. They should be playing soccer, not ice hockey.
Yeah, I am not Canadian so clearly I am not qualified to speak about hockey, but yeah I think teams want to have an all world goalie in net. Generally thats a good thing. Also, to say that the Bruins would be bottom feeders without Thomas is ridiculous. Umm hey Canada…Tuuka Rask…ever heard of him? Future allstar goalie from Finland. He isnt Tim Thomas, but who is? Also, the Bruins were 7th in the league in goals scored and 2nd in goal differential. I guess they fell backwards into those stats. Obviously the look of bottom feeders. The truth is that the Bruins do not have that elite level scorer on the roster at present(maybe Seguin in a year or two), but they are as deep as any team in the league and can roll four lines. The Bruins are here for a reason…
The Canucks are a talented team. People keep thinking that I am saying that they suck when I say that they arent worthy. They are the Congressman Weiner of the NHL. Weiner is smart, well educated, I would assume was hard working at some point, but the guy is a moron and a freak and its worthy of having a seat in congress. The Canucks maybe be qualified…but they arent worthy. No team that chirps, whines, complains, dives, pulls hair, bites, and gets blown out any time they get down in a game is worthy of lifting the Stanley Cup. They are an affront to the game and soul of hockey
