Adam Dunn and Jake Peavy are good…wait, what?

May 20, 2012 1 comment

So I tuned into the Cubs-Sox game today for a little bit.  First time I have watched White Sox baseball all season because…I mean…why would I watch the White Sox? Just so happened to be in the top of the 4th inning right before Adam Dunn hit his home run.  I nearly fell out of my chair when they showed his numbers for the year.  14 HRs, .390 OBP, slugging .596, and on pace for 120+ RBI…umm WTF?  I mean yeah he is still striking out a ton and only hitting .247, but who cares?!? Those are unreal numbers for Adam Dunn.  That’s the player they expected to get when they signed him.  The weather hasn’t even turned yet and the ball is still flying off of Dunn’s bat.  US Cellular is a power hitter’s dream when it’s hot outside.  Part of me thinks that he just can’t possibly keep hitting at this pace, but if he does and the White Sox win the division MVP talks shouldn’t be out of the question.  I really enjoyed making fun of Dunn last year and I just assumed that contract would go down as one of the worst in White Sox history.  I am completely floored by the year he is having.  Never saw it coming.

Then just when I thought I couldn’t be more shocked…Jake Peavy came out for the bottom of the 4th inning.  I vaguely remember someone telling me that Jake Peavy was the AL Pitcher of the Month for April.  That sounded ridiculous and I just assumed they meant comeback pitcher of the month or something.  More ridiculous than me assuming he was winning comeback pitcher of the month which doesn’t even exist.  I honest to God thought Jake Peavy was pitching out of the bullpen this year as like a setup guy.  His numbers are even more baffling than Dunn’s in a way.  I thought Jake Peavy was on the Kerry Wood plan.  A once great pitcher trying to battle injuries and age who was clearly on his way out of baseball.  The graphic showing his 2.39 ERA was literally jaw dropping.

I realize that admitting I completely ignored the White Sox is probably not a good thing since I am building a blogging empire based on Chicago Sports, but whatever.  Starting now I will officially sort of keep an eye on what they are doing…ish.  Once the new site launches(which is coming soon, hopefully tomorrow) I will have a regular White Sox writer to make sure this Chicago Sports site appears to care about the White Sox.  I don’t hate the White Sox. I am glad they are doing well and have a shot to win the division, but they are just…whatever.

Cleveland Guy Makes Adam Dunn Portrait Out Of Legos Like Loser

July 25, 2011 1 comment

Just when I thought Cleveland couldn’t suck anymore than they already do, some nerd goes and makes a Lego portrait of Adam Dunn.  Is there a more worthless guy to construct a Lego portrait of? He couldn’t even pick a guy from his own city? This is probably the best thing to come out of Cleveland in years, so pathetic. I guess spending hours making a portrait of the worst guy in Chicago is still better than making a portrait of anybody in Cleveland. This portrait of Adam Dunn is 2X2 feet and made up of 5000 Legos in a wooden frame.  But, guess what…this guy is a complete fraud.  This loser GLUED the Lego pieces together.  Pretty sure that’s called cheating.  Totally defeats the whole point of Legos.  I could have reconstructed the Roman Empire to scale as a kid if my mom let use glue.  All this guy did was glue some different color Legos together and didn’t even make it an action shot.  Fail.

I wish Adam Dunn was in the Home Run Derby

July 11, 2011 Leave a comment

Signing Adam Dunn for 4 years and 56 million dollars has to be the worst free agent signing ever.  Not just by the White Sox or in pro sports, but in life.  NewsCorp bought MySpace 6 years ago for $580m and sold it for $35m to Justin Timberlake a couple weeks ago, and I think even they are laughing at Jerry Reisndorf for the Adam Dunn deal.

Dunn’s stat line is almost unbelievable for a Major League player.  I had 3 three hits in my HS baseball career and I think my Batting Average and OPS were higher than Dunn’s. Right now Dunn is hitting .160, with 9 HRs and 117 strikeouts.  The record for strikeouts in a season is 223.  Dunn is going to smash that if he continues to play like this and get at bats.

Having said that…I’d love to see Adam Dunn in the Home Run Derby tonight.  There are two possible outcomes if he were participated.  1) He crushes the ball all over the park like he used to do and that gives him some confidence for the second half of the season, or 2) He breaks the record for strikeouts in a HR Derby.  One would be great for the Southsiders, the other would be great comedy.

PS: I despise the HR Derby.  It is one of the worst events in sports.  So boring.  I don’t understand why it gets so much fanfare.  Professional baseball players should be able to hit 500ft homeruns off of their hand selected 58 year-old pitcher who is grooving it for them.  Hearing Chris Berman say “back, back, back, back…gone” 4302 times a night is like nails on my eardrums.  If I watched the Bachelorette, I’d be way more excited for that tonight…but I am guy, so I don’t watch that.  I couldn’t care less if Ashley is going to give a rose to some poor guy who isn’t even that good looking when she is really still in love with Bentley.  But seriously, I don’t watch.

Jerry Reinsdorf wins a “major award”. Its fragile, must be Italian

June 30, 2011 Leave a comment

ChicagoAs the Chicago White Sox prepare to invade Wrigley Field to face the Cubs this weekend for another edition of the Crosstown Series, Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf already should feel like a winner. On June 21, Reinsdorf was one of the recipients of a Jefferson Award, regarded as the “Nobel Prize for public service.”

This sounds like a big deal and everything, but what did he get it for?  The article doesn’t say exactly what his charity work was, so I am going to assume that it’s for giving Adam Dunn a job and 56 million dollars.  I don’t know how he is supposed to feel like a winner.  The White Sox are the worst baseball team in this city not named the Chicago Cubs.

Lock of the Century: Baseball Edition

June 1, 2011 1 comment

Chicago White Sox +130 @Boston Red Sox -145

No way the White Sox keep this up, right?  They have won 6 in a row and two against the Red Sox in Fenway Park.  I always bet against streaks…except my own and I am on fire right now after going 4-0-1 last night in the Miami Heat vs Dallas Mavericks game.  White Sox are losing this game.  Sorry Chicago. Sox vs Sox series ends with a 2-1 Sox victory though.  Maybe they are getting on track.

New York Yankees +105 @ Oakland A’s -115

Not the most attractive line, but if there is a road dog on the board to take today its the Yankees.  Burnett is due for a good start and the Yankees lineup is still one of the best in baseball.  Too much for the pesky little A’s even though Gio Gonzalez has pretty nasty stuff.

Still picking winners on a daily basis.  I am on fire right now.  Burning up Costa Rica.  Sportsbooks all over the world are in trouble.

Lock of the Century: MLB picks of the Day

May 30, 2011 Leave a comment

The NHL and the NBA are almost over and if I am going to take down all of Costa Rica with my gambling picks then I am going to have to rely on a different weapon in my arsenal.  Baseball season is now upon and Chicago unfortunately will give up two locks today.

Houston Astros +125 @ Chicago Cubs -135

Look, I know the Astros are terrible.  One of the worst teams in the league, and full disclosure…I have never heard of this guy they have pitching today.  However, I have heard of the guy the Cubs are sending out to the bump today.  Rodrigo Lopez.  The guy is awful.  They just signed him off the street.  This is a case of going with the devil you don’t know instead of the devil you know.  The Cubs also won yesterday, I don’t think they have put together back to back wins all year.  I am taking the road underdog.

Chicago White Sox +170 @ Boston Red Sox -200

The White Sox are just plain awful.  Ozzie Guillen seems more crazy than normal lately.  The Red Sox may be a little fatigued since they played a double-header yesterday, but they are throwing Jon Lester out there today.  Lester is a dominant lefty and the White Sox are going to get shut down.  The Red Sox are who we thought they were when they signed Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez in the offseason.  If the White Sox are going to win a game in this series, it could be today…but they wont and that’s why it’s a lock of the century.

So there you have it Costa Rica.  No NBA, no NHL, no problem.
